Boxwood Gulch is fishing excellent despite higher flows and off-colored water. Don’t let the muddy water fool you…fishing can be excellent if you target the right water and choose the correct flies. Yesterday’s trip with John Higgs was a fabulous day! We fooled a bunch fish with Chamois Leeches, pink San Juan Worms, earthworm brown San Juan Worms, and large egg patterns.
John Higgs landed this beautiful Boxwood Gulch rainbow on a Chamois Leech. Chamois Leeches are an excellent option when the river is stained from spring run-off.
One might think you’re crazy for trying to fish during the peak of run-off. Not so, in fact; fishing can be excellent when the water is off-colored if youusethe proper tactics and techniques.Currently, the fish are gorging themselves on aquatic worms. Many of the trout we have been catching have had aquatic worms hanging out of their mouths.
The North Fork of the South Platte is currently flowing at 539 cfs near Bailey. This is all natural flow, Denver Water is not supplementing any additional water via the Roberts Tunnel. In fact, with an above average snowpack, Denver Water is projecting they will not turn on the Roberts Tunnel until the latter part of June when run-off subsides. This speculation is only a guess, however; and releases are subject to change based on the prevailing conditions.
“While Boxwood Gulch and Long Meadow are well known as great areas to fish much credit needs to be given to the experienced guides, particularly the guides from Blue Quill Angler, who know our waters and help their clients land trophy sized fish on every trip. While talking with your anglers from yesterday’s trip, it became quite evident that they had a wonderful experience. Some of them mentioned that they had never caught as many large fish on any of their other fishing trips any where they have fished. I need to mention that comments like this are not rare…I hear them all the time from beginners to experts anglers some of whom fish all over the world”, said Dan Mauritz, owner of Boxwood Gulch.
